POI Historical Details
John Abbott College is a CEGEP (collège d'enseignement général et professionnel) on the West Island of Montreal, located at 21 275 Lakeshore Road in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Quebec. Formerly, these buildings housed Macdonald College, a subsidiary of McGill University. MacDonald College still shares the campus with John Abbott.
The College was named for Sir John Abbott, Canada's third Prime Minister, who had a house in nearby Senneville, on the shores of the Lake of Two Mountains (lac des Deux-Montagnes). Created in 1970, John Abbott College opened its doors to 1200 students the following September. Without buildings of its own, the fledgling CEGEP rented space from Macdonald college to create some unusual classrooms (for instance, some were situated above the poultry barns).
